UPDATE 12/30/2020 // If you missed this over the Christmas holiday, on December 23, 2020, the ATF rescinded its letter. This is certainly a victory for the firearms community – over 71,000 comments were left on the Federal Register as of this morning, all voicing strong opposition. Additionally, several members of Congress submitted a letter to Regina Lombardo (Acting Director of the ATF) and William Barr (Attorney General), insisting that the proposed guidelines were “…alarming and jeopardizes law-abiding gun owners across the country.” There are still (5) remaining days for the public to comment on the original letter, which ends on January 4, 2021.
SUMMARY // The ATF is proposing to change the guidelines determining what is or isn’t an SBR, which could affect millions of legitimate firearm owners by reclassifying legally-obtained AR pistols as illegal SBRs (short-barreled rifles).
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? // This is not a good situation for any firearm owner, regardless if you own an AR pistol or not. The ATF is acting on their own accord, and if they get away with changing the law (legal definitions) just because they feel like it, it will set the precedence for the ATF to reclassify any other firearms that they deem fit. This is a huge issue, especially since the Biden-Harris administration is on the cusp of taking office.
WHAT CAN WE DO? // It’s time to stand together as a community and fight for our rights! Nothing has been set in stone, so there is still time to contact your state and federal officials and let them know how you feel about this attack on the 2nd Amendment. Contact your state legislators by calling them, emailing them, and having your friends and family do the same. You can also contact the White House, phone lines (202) 456-1111) and the Presidents email (email@example.com).
