“If you need to shoot your gun, we can help you out,” said Chris Rosser, who has opened The Vault at 1140 Gornick Ave in Gaylord, Michigan. Rosser named his new business after the place he keeps his collection of firearms. “I have a gun vault in my basement, so the name just came to me,” he said. Rosser served in the United States Marine Corps, then as a police officer for five years. Most recently, he worked as an emergency room nurse in Grayling for nine years. Rosser and his wife, Libby, also own Snap Fitness in Gaylord, and he decided to turn his hobby into a business after purchasing the property on Gornick Avenue. “I am a gun enthusiast,” he said. “I wanted to have that small gun shop feel, with the atmosphere of a dedicated gun shop. And I wanted to offer products and services that are not currently available in Gaylord, with a goal to build an indoor range in the future.”
The Vault is well-stocked with guns, gun cleaning supplies, ammunition, firearm accessories, and targets for shooting sports and other treasures for firearms aficionados. “We have a full range of hunting and antique rifles including French, Russian and German, as well as tactical weapons and handguns,” Rosser said. “We also offer ultrasonic cleaning service. I am an armorer, so we can do parts changing and minor repairs, scope mounting, bore sighting, and we will start doing gun refinishing, like hot bluing, stock refinishing and polishing. We also buy and trade.” Rosser said required full background checks for gun purchases can usually be completed in a matter of minutes.
In addition to firearms, Rosser has taken advantage of the square footage adjacent to The Vault and constructed an archery range. “It is a 15-meter range geared to youth, rated up to 40 pounds,” he said. Area school archery teams have been practicing at the range, which is also open to the public by reservation or drop-in. Rosser and his staff of two part-time assistants are ready to share their expertise and offer personal customer service at The Vault. “Anyone who has an interest in firearms, come in and chat with me,” he said. “The coffee — it’s called ‘Black Rifle’— from a veterans’ company — will be hot.”
